Tomato time?

Gardening makes a great stay-at-home activity in the summer. Tomatoes and lots of other vegetable seedlings like cucumbers and peppers can be planted now (in ground or containers) for a fun stay-at-home activity.

Zinnias can also be started this late and are great in Shabbos bouquets. Target carries kid-sized gardening equipment, like hot pink or fluorescent green watering cans, spades, and rakes, and they're not expensive. Kids'll enjoy watering daily, watching color changes that signal ripeness, observing bugs, weeding, etc. Convenient nurseries include OSH near Kosher Club (though not the best quality), Anawalt at Sepulveda and Pico, and (the best, I hear) Hashimoto Nursery at Sawtelle and Olympic.
