Davening during the summer

Marion B. asked about davening during the summertime when she emailed during the first week of the blog. She suggested that perhaps we could schedule davening in the a.m. at a family home throughout the summer. I imagine this could be either daily, or maybe Monday and Thursday, and that maybe we should separate boys and girls. Also, we might want to organize by neighborhood, depending on how many families are participating (like: Hancock Park, Pico east of Robertson, Pico west of Robertson). Incentives could be offered. The weekly parsha could be discussed.

Another alternative is discussing with your kids (and/or their rebbes or morot) what they think is the right amount to daven. Maybe young kids only need to day Modeh Ani and Shema, for example. You could even make a project of making an age-appropriate siddur or marking the "favorite" pages with post-its.

Also, we could make a tehillim project, with a weekly group meeting Thursdays, for example, including a treat or a raffle.

Please comment below or send emails to me at beccaklempner@gmail.com to share your opinions in this project.

  1. One year I did a merry-go-round camp. It was 3 of us and we each had a day to watch the other two kids. We had a set schedule of davening and then a weekly theme(parsh or yomtov...)we did arts and crafts to go with the theme. Then one day a week we did a trip with all the moms and on fridays we went swimming and did challah baking. maybe you can do mornings in set houses and then trips all together.

  2. Malkie brings a good option. Some of us may have too many kids or too big a spread of ages for this to work, but assuming that's not a problem, maybe it could work with 2 hours daily?
    For example:
each day starts with davening, then...
    Monday-art and read-aloud and trikes/bikes,
Tuesday-science project and read-aloud and dance,
    and so on.
With the round-robin, each mommy should--like Malkie said--have a couple hours to herself once a week.
Would we all choose the same themes, pre-planning activities together, but executing them in our separate "mommy camps," or would the mommies want to each pick their own themes and plan separately?
Another issue--some homes are too small for this plan. What would we do about that?

    Let's get some feedback!

  3. Not sure if we would be interested in a round robin. Zev, is going to do "mommy camp" this year. We also have many (B'YH) kids to make it really work.

Would probably be interested in some davening maybe with Torah learning in the morning for boys (on the younger side). Zev might even be willing to run it. (I have not asked him yet).
